Styrian Wine Road
8/27/2025 - 8/28/2025
We took the train about an hour south of Graz to the Styrian wine region where we rented e-bikes and rode to wineries for two days. It was SO AMAZING!! We arrived in the very tiny town of Ehrenhausen to pick up our e-bikes and off we went relying on google maps and a leap of faith (and perhaps a touch of stupidity!)
** NOTE – Please excuse the hair in all of these photos!! We were wearing bike helmets! Safety first! 😊
Our ride was SO PRETTY!!
Our first stop was the Polz Buschanschank (if you don’t know what I buschenschank is, check out the Stainz day trip… I give the run down toward end of that page. Or google it!). Polz is a 4th generation winery that was established in 1912.
Our next stop was Gullunder Buschanschank. This guy about did me in! We asked if we could do a tasting and how it worked… basically you could select all the wines you wanted to taste. If you bought something the tasting was free! Each “taste” was about a half a glass. We started with 6 wines. Then he threw in another premium wine for us to taste. They were all great! We decided to buy a bottle of a premium wine at 27 euro (about $31.00) because it was really good and because it was the most expensive one we had tasted. We sort of felt like we were already taking advantage of them!
We could really only buy one bottle to take with us because it was all we could fit on our bikes. We bought the bottle for 27 euro and I asked him to bump it up to 35 euro to include tip (which they are not used to). You would have thought we had just given him a little pile of gold! And out came more premium wines (I think he felt like he needed to “earn” the “big” tip)! We tasted a few more before we escaped. It was amazing. It was A LOT of wine… and we had to get on e-bikes and ride more. Good thing these were country roads with little to no traffic!
Winery number 3 was Ratschender Landhaus – it was not a Buschanschank… they served hot food. And after the last stop, we needed some serious food!! This place was big and beautiful. And the food and wine were both amazing!
Our final stop of day one was Robert Zweytick Buschanschank. It is a 7th generation winery dating back to the 1800’s! This is where we spent the night. We did a tasting, had some food, and then got some dessert and wine to enjoy on our balcony from our room… the views were incredible, especially from our balcony!
Our first Buschanschank on day two seemed to be closed. The door was unlocked, so we went inside to use the bathroom and were greeted by a huge, sweet dog. We went back outside and sat down to map out our next stop when the owner came out. She was super kind and didn’t speak a lick of English. After a quick game of charades, she returned with two glasses of wine and some water.
The next stop was Domaine Kilgers Buschanschank. This winery is literally part of a the Schloss Gamlitz palace with a 450 year old wine cellar (but the front porch area was very new). Supposedly one of the wines we tasted was ranked in the top 50 worldwide… who knows? It was really good though, even by our totally unrefined palates!
Our final Buschanschank of the adventure was Der Zweytick. It was beautiful and they had outstanding food. They also had cute little pots of succulents on the tables – I snapped a photo for you mom! 😊
We had an amazing 2 days! SO MUCH FUN (and wine!)… Grady did a fantastic job planning our adventure! One final, and very fitting photo… Weingut!
Sort of like a beer gut, but for wine drinkers. It’s what’s happening to our guts from drinking too much wine! 😊
