Hampton Court

We visited Hampton Court Palace which has a lot of Henry VIII history (which I am kind of into!). The palace was pretty cool, but the town wasn’t much to speak of. It took about an hour and a half to get there from our apartment. If you are a Bridgerton fan, you might also recognize quite a few scenes were filmed here.
Henry VIII’s Lord Chancellor (Cardinal Wolsey), built Hampton Court Palace. He wanted it to be “fit for a king”… but he might have been a bit too successful in that goal. Henry VIII liked it so much that he took it for himself! What a dick move that was! All six of Henry VIII’s wives lived here with him at some point in time. Some sections have been remodeled and reconstructed through the years by subsequent kings and queens, but there are still some original sections from Henry VIII era in the 1500’s. Most rooms are set up as museums rather than having original (or replica) furnishings. There is a lot of original artwork. One room is referred to as the “Haunted Gallery” because it is said to be haunted by Catherine Howard, Henry VIII’s 5th wife. After being accused of adultery and imprisoned in the palace, she broke free from her guards and ran through this gallery to find Henry and beg for mercy. The guards caught her and dragged her back to her imprisonment while she screamed in terror. Her screams of terror have haunted this room ever since.
