Winsor

We took the train to Windsor to see the castle. The train trip took about 1.5 hours. The town of Windsor is really cute. Lots of cute restaurants and some cobble stone streets, shopping, and street musicians. But, of course, the real draw is the Windsor Castle which is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world (parts of the castle date back to 1070).

We have seen a lot of castles and palaces, but I must admit, this one ranks up there near the top in our list of favorites. It houses a huge royal collection of antiques, artwork, and artifacts. Needless to say, every room is jaw dropping. Many contain pieces from as far back as the 14th and 15th centuries. When we were there, King Charles was in residence. Obviously we never saw him, but you know he is there if the royal standard flag is flying from the tower rather than the union flag. The St. George chapel on the castle grounds was pretty incredible as well. There are 10 monarchs buried there including Queen Elizabeth II and Henry VIII. Unfortunately no photography was allowed inside any of the buildings. We took lots of pictures outside, but to see the inside you will have to make a visit! I promise you won’t regret it! 😊
