Kakheti Wine Region

We did a really fun winery tour that included 3 wineries plus a fourth stop in a medieval town. The furthest stop was about 2 hours from Tbilisi. The tour was a little pricey (by Georgian standards), but included all the food and wine you wanted… so of course we had to get our money’s worth! Holy crap, I ate and drank SO MUCH that day!!

Our first stop was a really pretty winery/boutique hotel where we had a tasting and lunch. It was very modern and beautiful!

Our next winery was smaller and we did just a tasting. By this time I was just buzzed enough to think that trying to climb down into a qvevri was a good idea. A qvevri is a gigantic egg-shaped clay pot used for making, ageing and storing the wine. It is about 7.5 feet deep and is buried in the ground. Climbing down into that thing was definitely NOT a good idea! Almost as dumb as climbing a tree because the trunk is shaped like a horse (not mentioning any names)!

After this we took a short and strategically timed break from drinking (sort of) and visited the medieval walled town of Sighnaghi. It was so charming! We wandered the town a bit and walked the city walls. The walls were amazing and had beautiful views. While walking the walls, there was a random ladder that led to a restaurant/bar! So we went up there and did a shot of cha cha (not our smartest move in a day already packed with drinking!)

Our final stop was a small family owned winery for a full traditional dinner. This couple was SO interesting. They were in their mid to late 30’s and the winery had been in the husband’s family, but they mostly just were very small producers for friends and family. The husband had been a big shot international attorney and the wife came from Russian royalty and was a trained chef. They left Georgia and worked internationally for a number of years and got tired of the rat race so they came back home and took over the family winery and are growing it into a proper business. And he had the most glorious beard I have ever seen… he definitely gives Devin some competition! 😊
