Cappadocia valleys & Underground City

10/15/2025

We did a day trip that took us to various sites within an hour of Goreme. The landscape is so incredible!

We did a few lookout point stops that were beautiful!

Our next stop was “mushroom valley” … the reason for the name is pretty obvious from the photos! 😊

Our next stop was the Goreme open air museum which is a valley filled with rock-carved churches and monasteries that was built during the Byzantine period (around 400AD – 1400 AD). It was home to monks and also a pilgrimage destination.

After the open air museum we had lunch and a stop at a shop that did pottery demonstrations. It was kind of cool, but waaaay over-priced!

The final stop of the day was the Kaymakli Underground City, which was created around the 8th-7th centuries BC!! It was used by the earliest Christians as a refuge to hide from persecution.

An intricate system of tunnels, chambers, and galleries was excavated deep into the volcanic rock. There are eight floors and it is over 85 meters deep. It was so stinking cool!

We had to make our way through some seriously small tunnels. Grady kept getting mad at me for taking his picture, but it was the best way to depict just how small these tunnels were that we were going through! And they were very long!
