Salisbury
6/12/15
We did a day trip to Salisbury which was about an hour from Bradford-on-Avon. We had our first major faux pas of the trip… and it’s only day 2 – UGH! Let’s just say that it is really important to pay attention to the car park closing hours. Particularly when your house keys are locked in the car (that is locked in the car park!) Enough about that!
The main attraction within the town is the cathedral. By the time we arrived, we could not go up into the tower. So that was a disappointment. This cathedral was pretty cool as far as cathedrals go. Construction began in 1220 and it has the tallest spire in Britain. If you are into Tudor history, there were a few connections – Edward Seymour is buried there (nephew of Jane Seymour, Henry VIII’s third wife and husband of Catherine Gray whose sister Jane was queen for 9 days until she was beheaded). George Sydenham, chaplain to Henry VII and VIII is buried there. Thomas Bennett, Secretary to Cardinal Wolsey is buried there. It also houses one of the 4 remaining original copies of the Magna Carta and the oldest working mechanical clock in the world.
The town is fairly small, pretty cute, and very walkable. We went to a very old pub for dinner (Haunch of Venison). The building dates back to the 1300’s and is definitely worth seeing. Eisenhauer and Churchill met here to discuss WWII strategy. If you are ever in Salisbury, stop in for a drink. The building and history are phenomenal, the food and service were average.
