Burgos
7/24/25
Because the weather forecast all along was so gross, we decided to do a day trip to Burgos which is about a 2.5 hour drive inland straight south. We took the long route which was actually fewer miles and a more direct route, but it was all two lane roads through hills and mountains and small towns… it was beautiful! Worth every bit of the additional 30 minutes it added to the drive (says the person who didn’t do any of the driving!). Along the way we stopped off in the village of Orbaneja del Castillo.
Orbaneja del Castillo was STUNNING! It is a small village tucked into the mountains with a waterfall running right through it! We walked the stairs and hills to the top of the waterfall and checked out the cave where the water originates and wandered the town for a bit. I LOVED this little village. If your travels ever take you anywhere near this area, it’s definitely worth a stop.
After our stop in Orbaneja del Castillo, we drove the remaining hour to Burgos. Burgos dates back to the 9th-century and once served as the capital of the Kingdom of Castile (before Spain was united into a single country). You enter the town through the Arco de Santa Maria Gate. It is one of 12 gates the city had in the middle ages.
The main sight in Burgos is its stunning Gothic cathedral which began being built in 1221.
